The Story
Some people enter the battery industry because it's the next opportunity.
Dane El Safty entered it because he had already spent a lifetime understanding the industry it needed to replace.
Graduating from the University of Sydney with a degree in Chemical Engineering and a major in Petroleum Engineering, Dane began his career at the heart of Australia's energy sector.
His first role was in Research & Development with CSR, developing synthetic fuel technologies — before moving into refining with Caltex Oil as a Refined Products Engineer.
From there his career expanded into petroleum production and refining, working with Applied Chemicals in Brisbane before spending two years in the United States undertaking environmental engineering projects with Chevron Texaco.
Working across oil production, refining and environmental remediation gave Dane a perspective that very few engineers ever experience. He saw both the incredible importance of energy — and the environmental cost of producing it.
Rather than ignore the problem, he chose to dedicate his career to solving it.
Building Better Energy
Returning to Australia, Dane joined Shell where he specialised in petroleum recycling, developing processes that transformed waste oil back into valuable lubricating products.
He continued pushing sustainability further by engineering waste-to-energy systems capable of converting municipal waste and agricultural crops into synthetic fuels.
Eventually he founded his own environmental engineering company, conducting large-scale energy auditing and efficiency projects for some of Australia's largest fuel and energy companies.

Engineering The Next Generation
Long before hydrogen became a global conversation, Dane successfully developed Australia's first Hydrogen Fuel Cell Proton Exchange Membrane.
His attention then turned toward advanced battery chemistry.
